Silhouettes, Stories and Exhibition Planning
This week we rolled out a large piece of paper and drew some full-body silhouettes. Eze documented the process, thanks Eze, great pics! Each person thought of some words to describe themselves, to place inside their silhouette. It's hard to think of words to describe yourself so we helped each other out, adding words here and there to other peoples images. Some people were surprised to have so many beautiful words said about them. These words will help us to create some more self-portraits in the coming weeks.
Eze also translated a whole bunch of Exhibition planning details into Arabic. Thanks Ezeldin!

The Language of Photography
This week Amie Batalibasi, local documentary filmmaker and photographer, joined us to share her knowledge of photography and storytelling.
Amie shared some of her favourite photographs and also taught the group about the "language of photography".
What a great week! Ideas were shared by all.
Amie took us step by step through the process of how to tell a story with a series of photographs. Each person in our group wrote a storyboard for the first time. Then we all tried our hand at telling a story with 3 photographs.

Tell me a story
This week we shared stories about our own very special photos. Everyone brought in one of their photos to help tell a story about themselves.
It was a good time for sharing and great preparation for our exhibition coming up in November for the Big West Fest.
Some people voiced, for the first time, a story about their own photos.
Afterwards we all went crazy picking pictures out of magazines that we really loved. Then we all told a story about why we loved that picture and how it also told a story about ourselves.
Here are a few examples...

One Photo One Story
Building from last weeks session and the group's interest in dramatic photography ...
this week we set about taking some staged photographs to tell just one story.
We looked at some simple camera functions: flash, no flash & changing the exposure before starting our happy snapping.
Today's Theme: One Photo One Story.

We looked at some simple camera functions: flash, no flash & changing the exposure before starting our happy snapping.
Today's Theme: One Photo One Story.
Some people focused on facial expressions, some photos ended up with no face at all. Others constructed scenes with different characters, each with their own emotion, action or intention. We explored, played, took heaps of snaps and then projected them onto a large screen to take a closer look. After chatting, re-framing and seeing them large-scale, we could see what was needed to get the message across in each photograph. Ahhh...the learning process. Now 2 weeks holiday to let some of those ideas simmer away. Next Workshop is the 7th October... stay tuned.
